Side Wall Removal - How To Remove An In-Ground Swimming Pool
Your pool bottom is punctured and now it's time to take the sides out of the pool. To do this you'll have to cut the sides of the pool into manageable sections (about 4' wide) with the demo saw. Then, bring the machine into the pool down the ramp you just made so you can pull the walls in to free them and then lift them out. The reason we did this after breaking up the bottom of the pool is that we had to put the machine in the deep end of the pool which necessitated filling it in. We couldn't fill it in until the bottom had been inspected so we got the bottom inspected, filled the deep end, and then removed the walls. Here it is, step-by-step:
First, cut the walls with the demo saw from top to bottom every 4 feet or so. Be sure to cut all the way through the lip at the top and bottom. Note: the bottom of the walls is set in a ring of concrete and you'll cut in to this to cut through the lip. For this reason I used a masonry type cutoff wheel in my demo saw since it does fine cutting through steel and concrete.
Now, bring the machine into the pool and position it facing the walls. We used the backhoe with the thumb to reach behind the walls (through the opening in the deck we made during the partial deck demolition phase) and pull the walls in towards the machine then up.
Here's what it looked like when the walls were halfway out:
